My Story

How I got into teaching…

My name is Max Allen Duroseau. I am a Haitian-American educator from Miami, Florida. I’ve been teaching internationally for over five years in Mainland China, and I’m enthusiastic about shaping young minds! In fact, education and scholarship are among my key values, along with entrepreneurship and creative expression. For my undergraduate, I attended The Florida State University for Fashion-Business. Upon graduation, I attended the University of Missouri to pursue a Master’s degree in Textile and Apparel Management. In 2019, I relocated to Shanghai to work as a teacher, where I fell in love with education as a career path. Now, with over 5 years of experience in teaching and administration, I am eager to use my talents as both a scholar and artist to create value within and beyond the classroom!

Outside of teaching, my main passion is photography, specifically documentary and portraiture. I enjoy telling stories through a visual medium to evoke strong feelings and inspire curiosity about the world. I prefer to travel to villages and rural areas to explore unique cultures and ways of life. I leverage this in the classroom by integrating it into my curriculum, to encourage my students to practice empathy and search for their own voice in creative ways. I believe this pedagogical approach, combined with strategic planning and assessment, allows for students to nurture their critical thinking skills and expressive talents.

Last year, I held an in-school photo exhibition, showcasing the life and customs of the local Dong minority in Guizhou, China. The immersive exhibition included archival prints, recorded soundscapes, and artifacts for the students to interact with. I plan to release my photographic works to the public this year.

Mission Statement

As an educator, I strive to connect with my students by leveraging my personality, listening, and communication skills to build trust and create an environment where learning thrives. My goal is to explain concepts in a way that is accessible and meaningful, ensuring that students gain a deep understanding and that their progress aligns with key learning outcomes. I teach to empower students to develop a strong sense of identity and purpose, inspiring them to think beyond their dream occupations and understand the immense value their lives hold. I want them to identify this value early and share it with others throughout their lives.

Vision

My dream is for my students to discover their own voice, confidently defend their ideas, and begin to recognize and correct errors in their thinking independently, because of what they’ve learned in my class. My ultimate goal is to produce educational content using my talents as a visual artist and teacher, to create work that not only entertains but also positively shapes minds.
